Round Flange

This is a motor with a round flange which is the very front of the motor and where the "pump bolts on to the motor", the flange is metal (aluminum) and threaded it is not plastic or cast iron.
The pump back plate is usually made of plastic or cast iron.


These motors are generally used for in ground pools and well pumps
Square Flange

This is a motor with a square flange which is the very front of the motor and the "motor bolts to the pump" the square flange is not threaded, the bolts go through the flange into thee pump which is threaded, the flange is metal (aluminum) not plastic or cast iron.
The pump back plate is usually made of plastic or cast iron.

These motors are generally used for in ground pools and well pumps
No Flange

This is a motor that does not have a flange, it has a "front plate" and a rigid base, we simply call them "small frame motors"  the pump (above ground pool) or wet end (hot tub/Jacuzzi) is attached to the motor using the bolts that go all the way through the motor (thru bolt)  holding everything together.


These motors are generally used for above ground pools and hot tub/jacuzzis
